Pensions are introduced (1900s), and people don't need to have their kids caring for them when they're old, and the birth rate decreases again. Every country had that cycle, and you see that also in Africa. These are just a bit after the middle of the cycle.
It's the other way round. If you look at history (here Europe), you have a high birth and infant death rate and a stable population. Medical care improves (1800s), and the population increases drastically. /2

Absolutely. Children are valued much more now, at least in my country. But there is a proverb, "Nach mir die Sintflut!" "After me, the Deluge!" There are too many people who already follow that stance. Saving the Earth for the children is a strong driver.
