And we're lucky to manage that! We lost a lot of nurses and care home staff who still need replacing.

I really would have paid to watch when they tried to replace the fruit pickers from Poland with jobless people. They had years of experience in a hard job and had no problems finding work elsewhere.

I remember watching some Polish plasterers opposite our old house in Kent... my god they didn't stop, did an incredible job, and were unfailingly neat and polite. Try getting a British workman to turn up! (Not always true, but... kind of true). Fruit picking is damn hard work!

They are renowned for their fantastic work, especially for traditional crafts. I know that they make up at least 50% of those doing the restoration on mediaeval cathedrals in Germany and, I think, all over Europe.
