Early Singers are workhorses, and easy to repair and service on your own. Top handles are often only made to take the top off, NOT to carry them. Especially on the wooden tops. Never pick those up that way.

Given there's nothing on either I've seen with a top handle that implies they should be carried any other way I'm not suprised the cases broke then.
