said this on stream but I would love a halo game that was a large-scale class based shooter like battlefield or battlefront UNSC side can be marines, odsts, Spartans, pilots etc while covenant/banished side can be grunts, jackals, brutes, elites etc just imagine 😩
Honestly having the Spartans be their own class seems interesting if a bit over powered….. then I remembered that the covenant side had brutes and elites and such to so it’s pretty evened out lol. Plus the marines could get a lot more specialized while Spartans need Spartan sized (~) equipment etc.
Or actually could have it be like 2042 where all classes can technically all use the same weapons, but each one will have a specific weapon tree that they are better at using than others

There was a spinoff of Quake 3 called Enemy Territory: Quake Wars that had this exact human vs. alien battlefield concept.
Honestly You'd love Coldsnap and Hugeass for Halo 1 Custom Edition. they both use the map size maximum of 5km x 5km and have massive vehicles that can fire nukes.

Battlefront had a system for this; get to a certain point threshold and you can choose higher-ranking units to play as, and if your team gets a high enough threshold, they could choose a "Hero" to play as, usually big-name characters, force users, etc. Same could be done for Spartans here
they tried something like that with Reach but made the mode overly complicated if I'm remembering right

Personally I've been hankering for a X-COM (Firaxis) alike turn based tactical game in the Halo setting with a whole bunch of campaigns where you control various UNSC and covenant teams, both their respective elites and grunts, through series of missions where mamy of them will probably die.

I'd personally LOVE a revisit to Halo Wars as a concept. The franchise just feels like such a natural RTS fit with its established hierarchies and obvious hero characters for each faction.

The more I think about this the cooler it gets. Ground-to-space transitions like the Elite/Renegade Squadron in Pelicans/Hornets/Vultures and Phantoms/Banshees, going up to UNSC frigates and Covenant cruisers, coming back down via escape pods. Rail guns and glassing as space-to-surface attacks? 🫠

Honestly it has such weirdly detailed and great space warfare lore that I’d kill for a more space focused RTS. This can be the traditional RTS to Halo Wars’s more accessible approach.
Rejected shotgun kind of has a large scale thing as a mod or you can drive scarabs and stuff even was playing around with using a pelican to actually pick up other vehicles and stuff a while ago. I think that's still in progress.

I’m no expert but doesn’t the covenant have like 20x the population and also their bigger units absolutely body anything short of an odst or spartan? I can see it working mechanically but I can also see people loudly complaining about it not being “lore accurate” when a marine solos a hunter

That they haven't done an ODST game in the stylings of Helldivers is a crime. That we don't have a Halo space battle game after they did the work to make that mission in Reach is a crime. That we don't have a survival-horror based around the flood is a crime. Rich IP being totally under-utilized.
I had really hoped that Halo Wars would potentially lead to that kind of additional genre shifting spin off. Especially since it could easily have progressing map structures going from space assaults to securing planetside beachheads and so on. Could even potentially have a Flood faction too.
Halo as a universe had so much potential for other game genres. Large scale battlefield-style fps, survival horror against the Flood or a covenant invasion. So many new stories to be told, or old ones like Contact Harvest/Cole Protocol. Instead we got a CoD style shooter and master cheeks 😔

It's a lot to take in, but that is absolutely a thing we do in Arma3 with mods
Battlefront would also work well. Players start as Marines or Jackals, and command an AI squad of other marines or Grunts. If you play with friends they can take the roles of the AI in your squad. Then, you earn points, and get to call in upgrades like ODSTs and Spartans, and vehicles too.
