Honey Don't isn't even bad enough to watch for the sake of being bad. About halfway into this film following the lesbian meanderings of a Bakersfield PI with a fake southern accent (for some reason??), as I felt the distinct lack of tension running through my body, I realized I had been queerbaited

To be fair, a loooot of Bakersfield does use an Oklahoma accent (my mom’s family is from that area). Buuuut yah fake southern accents are just. lol you know what I mean

I've hitch-hiked through both Bakersfield and Oklahoma and while I admit Bakersfield is the Oklahoma/Amarillo of CA, they don't sound like that!

Fair! I spent a lot of childhood on the Oklahoma side of AR and every time we visited Bakersfield (area) I didn’t have to hide my accent because all of them sounded like me lol. Maybe it’s just the smaller towns where my parents are

That said a lot of the time these movies really force the accent.. your review means I ain’t seeing this one so I’m willing to bet it’s the Hollywood forced one and not the one I’m imagining or that I use. It never is lol..

That's exactly the thing, she did this in her last movie too. There is a drawl to Bakersfield and Barstow but she was like trying to do Little Rock

I friggen hate that. I remember being devastated as a kid when I wasn’t cast into our high school play of Steel Magnolias - my parents had moved me out to Nevada but my actually genuine mix of NW AR and NW LA accents weren’t good enough for even a role as an extra 🙄

Every plot point just ended in murder, which I know is a noir thing and this film was clearly going for a tonally light-hearted approach to a dark and gritty trope where the protagonists are ultimately ineffectual or something? Idk it made everything feel really pointless though

There's one decent lesbian scene in the whole movie and I do choose to believe in this scene Aubrey Plaza was actually really fingering Andie McDowel's daughter whose name escapes me, but I do admit is very hot, just why the accent though? You're in Bakersfield

Honey Don't is essentially procedural copaganda about a mid detective who tries to solve a boring case but she has gay sex with Aubrey Plaza so there I was sitting in the theater like a crawdad who had just chased a chicken wing though the one-way entrance of a cage.
