Indeed - self-improvement seems to generate a sense of control. Hadn't thought about it in that way before. Widening (stretching) our horizons could be akin to the tree spreading its branches, though, as this quote did for me.

Growth... Improvement... Development... Hmmmn.... Similar words - some more fraught with judgement than others. Non-pressuring encouragement vs "pull yourself up by the bootstraps." (Though needn't be considered in such a binary way)
