I am really annoyed that BlueSky has turned me into a Gavin Newsom Defender because (1) I don't think he'd be a good candidate and (2) I don't think he'd be a good President. He's just not a centrist!!

If he was a stale boring guy with the exact same track record, nobody would bother to hate him. I mean, California Republicans would I guess. But for better and for worse he's got vibes, a persona people (pretty understandably) love to hate. I don't think it has much to do with his actual governing.

Jerry Brown was several notches to the right of Newsom, but there was no passionate, national hate for Brown (in his 2010s version, not his 1970s ancient history) like there is for Newsom. It's because Newsom revels in being a shameless character. The particular complaints get backfilled from that.

I think he'd be a great Attorney General. He's a born hater and would make Republicans' lives hell.
