You’re right, we can’t become numb, but we also can’t keep letting the conversation be derailed by distractions. For decades, Republicans in Congress have voted against even the most basic gun reforms while shifting blame anywhere but the guns themselves.
Will new laws stop all gun violence? Of course not, that’s a silly notion. But they can absolutely reduce how often these tragedies happen. That's worth atleast trying if it saves lives. Our kids deserve so much better than this.
What sets the U.S. apart is how easy it is to get high-capacity weapons, how horribly weak our red flag laws are, and now how funding for CDC and NIH research on violence prevention has been gutted. Until we face that reality, this heartbreak will keep repeating.

My problem is that I listen & watch a lot of true crime shows so I’m very biased about the overall or general stability of a large swath of the American public. That anyone would not know some perverse gun incident wouldn’t happen when kids returned to school, in my opinion, isn’t paying attention.
