Some (myself included) believe that Mušḫuššu, the side-kick of the Sumerian/Babylonian god Marduk, was inspired by a monitor. Mušḫuššu was sometimes described as a beautiful serpent - but serpent wasn't exclusively legless snakes. +

It's highly likely that a now-extinct relative of the Nile Water Monitor once lived in the now-drained marsh where the Tigris and Euphrates met. Reports of such a monitor exist all the way up through the 1980s although no zoological specimen exists. Habitat was right though.
