Just started “Cogan’s Trade” by George V. Higgins (which became “Killing Them Softly” in theaters). Some of the grittiest and most well-written dialogue this side of Elmore Leonard. I’ve never seen an author characterize people so well through their words. #booksky #books

That said, some of the language (in particular, the widespread racism) hasn’t aged well, so it is very much a novel of its time. I think readers are intelligent enough to contextualize a novel in terms of when it was written, but I still feel a responsibility to point out that I’m not blind to it.
