The portrait in question was donated in 1952, on the 100th anniversary of Lee becoming the superintendent at West Point. There already existed a portrait of Lee as he appeared as superintendent (in his US Army uniform), so you know exactly why this one was given to the Academy.

(The previous portrait was donated by the Daughters of the Confederacy, but the administration at the time refused to accept any representation of Lee in a Confederate uniform. Sadly, things changed by the 1950s.)
