No further money will be budgeted for upkeep, and there will be no conveniently located services.
Marc Reeve (@cmraman.geek.org) reply parent
Translation: he’s going to throw some money at Big Construction, which will churn out Soviet-style brutalist concrete housing blocks as cheaply as possible on federal land, and then he’ll send the National Guard into the cities to move out all the poors to these new housing projects.

The Matthew Turner is still moored off Santa Cruz. This is the best view I could get with my phone, hopefully the real photos will be better.

Depeche Mode used a pipe construction similar to this on the Black Celebration tour in 1986. Cool then, cool now.

We have little brown bats and hoary bats around here. I have a bat house that I won in a raffle years ago, but we live in a condo so I have no place to put it up 😢

Model T runabout with a 1924 plate on it and… that car is clearly a Work In Progress and could currently serve as the illustration in the dictionary for “jalopy”. It runs, though! (There was also a guy with a Model A, and eventually they both stopped at the lighthouse to chat.))

I learned the word from my maternal grandfather, who used it to refer to a pedal car I had as a kid. So I already knew how to pronounce it when I encountered it in the Hardy Boys books. I didn’t take this photograph. However, this ship, the brigantine Matthew Turner (built in Sausalito starting in 2013, launched 2017, based on plans from Bay Area shipwright Matthew Turner whose yard was in Benicia), was moored off the main beach in Santa Cruz today, and I did get some photos.

One more photo for the day - the last one from my first roll. Egret on the beach just east of the entrance to Natural Bridges State Park. As before, Ricoh KR-10, Fujicolor 400, Tokina 28-85 zoom at 70mm setting, skylight(1B) filter, f11 aperture priority. #filmisntdead #believeinfilm

It's been suggested elsewhere that JD's obsession with gratitude is due to his abusive childhood - you have to be grateful even when you're being treated like crap. Naturally as an adult he has applied that to politics. (Meanwhile, enjoy a semi-related Danny Elfman song.)

Futzing around with a 28-85 zoom on the Ricoh - the (sole remaining) natural bridge at Natural Bridges State Park, photographed from the overlook at the main entrance. Ricoh KR-10, Fujicolor 400, f11 aperture priority, approximately 1:30 pm August 13, 2025. #filmisntdead

I encountered a drive-thru AI at Burger King today - it said its name was Patty. (Very funny, BK.) It was not particularly good at taking my order, which was a very simple order. And of course it tried to upsell at every opportunity. Won’t be going back anytime soon, and I told the cashier that.

In fact, even after the portrait in question was removed, there remained a portrait of a younger Lee in US Army uniform, with Chapultepec Castle in the background. That was to commemorate his service as superintendent at West Point.

The Michigan Doctrine has much to answer for. (And it's not even actually a law! It was a judicial decision in a lawsuit 100 years ago! [Between Henry Ford and the Dodge Brothers, that's why it's the Michigan Doctrine.])
Marc Reeve (@cmraman.geek.org) reply parent
Yeah, Ed Harris almost drowned. Of course, so did Cameron (he ran out of air, and the *actors* were assigned safety divers, but he hadn’t assigned one to himself.)
Marc Reeve (@cmraman.geek.org) reply parent
(The previous portrait was donated by the Daughters of the Confederacy, but the administration at the time refused to accept any representation of Lee in a Confederate uniform. Sadly, things changed by the 1950s.)
Marc Reeve (@cmraman.geek.org) reply parent
The portrait in question was donated in 1952, on the 100th anniversary of Lee becoming the superintendent at West Point. There already existed a portrait of Lee as he appeared as superintendent (in his US Army uniform), so you know exactly why this one was given to the Academy.
Marc Reeve (@cmraman.geek.org) reply parent
Ah. I haven’t seen that post, I suppose.
