Two great white sharks are near a rock with seals lying on it. The one closer to the surface says “My fin is showing again, isn’t it?” while the other remains silent. (His fin *is* showing.) the URL theycantalk.com appears in the lower left corner.

The Matthew Turner is still moored off Santa Cruz. This is the best view I could get with my phone, hopefully the real photos will be better.

A two-masted brigantine (a “tall ship”, though on the smaller side) lies at anchor offshore from a sandy beach. A shallow fog bank lies well offshore, with the top of some hills poking out above. Some people may be seen on the beach, with a variety of umbrellas and other shade structures.

I didn’t take this photograph. However, this ship, the brigantine Matthew Turner (built in Sausalito starting in 2013, launched 2017, based on plans from Bay Area shipwright Matthew Turner whose yard was in Benicia), was moored off the main beach in Santa Cruz today, and I did get some photos.

A two-masted ship with a mixture of square sails and fore-and-aft sails on the foremast, and fore-and-aft sails on the after mast, sails on the San Francisco Bay with the skyline of San Francisco in the background. Photo from the website of Call of the Sea, a maritime educational foundation in Sausalito, CA, which owns the ship.

Futzing around with a 28-85 zoom on the Ricoh - the (sole remaining) natural bridge at Natural Bridges State Park, photographed from the overlook at the main entrance. Ricoh KR-10, Fujicolor 400, f11 aperture priority, approximately 1:30 pm August 13, 2025. #filmisntdead

The natural bridge with a gap between it and a rock outcrop (there used to be a second natural bridge, it fell down years ago). Waves may be seen breaking at the bottom of the photo, along with invasive ice plant. A point in the background has buildings and various vegetation on it, including two tall palm trees. 28mm setting on the lens. A closer view of the natural bridge - you can start to tell that there are birds on top of it. You can no longer see the breaking waves, and the buildings on the point in the background are more distinct. 50mm setting on the zoom lens. The natural bridge fills the center of the photograph. You can now tell that the birds on top of the rock are cormorants, and there are also a couple of pelicans in flight over the rock. Waves may be seen breaking on the point in the background, where a large building stands slightly back from the water's edge. (It's the Seymour Center at UC Santa Cruz's Long Marine Lab.) 85mm setting on the zoom lens.
