Canada also has stakes in various companies. But they started out as Crown corporations first that privatized or companies that the government helped to get off the ground.

Sure does! Many utilities have been or are publicly owned. I don't have a problem with public ownership. An example is Alberta's healthcare system - the public facilities can provide certain surgeries at a fraction of private surgeries, yet the government insists private is better.
