genuinely do not understand the people who insist that nyc doesn't have nature nearby. i sort of get it with westerners because they have that weird sexual relationship with tall mountains and desert, but the new york area has nature as good or better than anywhere else east of the rockies

Not sure if it’s too far for “real New York” but even if you’re after wilderness backpacking, I’m currently driving 9 hours to go hiking in the Catskills! This is desirable country!
the delaware water gap, the catskills, the poconos, fire island/sunken forest, the pine barrens, the hudson highlands, the palisades. and the urban parks are some of the best in the whole world.
There's more natural beauty along the Hudson Line than most states have entirely, and you can always rent a car to visit the Adirondacks which are one of the most scenic and underrated mountain ranges in the country
The beaches are a subway ride away !
There’s a whole very famous school of art named after the Hudson River because it’s so pretty and I can get on a train on the Hudson Line almost any hour of any day if I want to go see the non-urban part! There’s very little about NYC you could say is underrated, but access to nature is one.
