I look at their profile. If they're full on MAGANUTS & hate is the highest percentage of their comments, I don't care to engage. But I mute most. They don't get their "badge of honor," and I can choose to view if I feel like it.
Maybe like a threshold-based thing? Ten people block you in a day, and you get an animated flush or kicked to the curb gif. Anonymized, and serves as a bit of a warning.

I don't follow back. My feed is what I have to say. I have little to say but some people find it interesting I guess so they follow me. I follow people who say things I have interest in. Follows define your feed. They are not a commodity you hand out. They aren't transactional. At least IMO.

I have OCD & find it really satisfying to just sit & mindlessly block accts while I'm listening to music/watching TV. I don't really use the block lists. But sometimes I just go to some awful user's page & block everyone following them (the whole list) then I block that user. It's very therapeutic.
I do much the same sometimes, but I do check the followers out to eliminate false positives By no means at all is everyone vetting who they follow like they should be doing, and starter packs exacerbate the problem.
Yeah. I pick n choose out of starter packs. I'm not here to get or follow thousands of accounts. Starter packs are kind of nuts. Just too many low quality accounts and bot accounts.
When I joined by invite, November last year, membership was 1.7M and following thousands of accounts was a reportable infringement of site policy, categorised as "Engagement hacking". For better or worse that approach got binned, in favour of giving newcomers their Continuity Twitter 🤷🫤
Even if someone is decent at vetting, they're not me and in the haste to get a list out, often miss flags. Best way for me to find decent folks is to peruse the lists of people I come to trust, lurk on their followers threads, then pick the few that are fire.

I've been reading a lot about ADHD because my mom always believed I was misdiagnosed with OCD & that I really had ADHD. I don't think I was misdiagnosed, but I do think there is a lot of overlap between the 2 conditions. I definitely don't check all the ADHD boxes--but more than not.
There is overlap. I have several mild ocd symptoms. There are also several overlaps with autism. When my daughter was diagnosed with ADHD, they went back and forth on which she had but settled on ADHD because she doesn't have sensory issues. All 3 of these are often also comorbid in pairs or all 3.
Welp, I guess I'll be reading up on autism now. Because I do have some sensory issues, mostly related to textures (certain materials & foods) + a few very specific sounds. Oof. I should probably just go get reevaluated as an adult.

Yeah, on one forum I ignored (like muting) a putative ally because the way he argued was so grating. There was also someone politically annoying, but great on other subjects, so I could expand his posts while being able to skip over his political comments. 'Blocking' needs more diversity.

I used to do that on Twitter and turned out very very few actually surprised me. I've taken the complete opposite tact here of block, block, block...and my experience is so very much better.
I don’t mind different perspectives, what I mind is the demeaning and degrading comments because I have a different opinion. Once they do that…I’m moving on.
This, I think, was more my view in 2009, when I joined Twitter when people with different viewpoints could have civil discussions. 2016 changed that and it felt like it became (and has now definitely become) just hate, hate, hate wrapped in insult after insult.
