Heinlein called this "The Crazy Years". When Huckabee was running back in 2012 he was eerily reminiscent of Nehemiah Scudder, the backwoods preacher who turned the US into a theocracy in Heinlein's "Future History".

Writing in 1940, he got very close to nailing the year. He had Scudder elected in 2012 then subsequent elections cancelled. david-brin.medium.com/heinleins-fu...

Wow. I have read Heinlein almost all of my life, and did not know about this book. It is definitely prescient, and Heinlein has a deep, and thorough grasp of human nature.

Heinlein tried to show how bad the Crazy Years were with some newspaper headlines from the era. None would raise an eyebrow today.
