Citizens United is definitely a major problem, but the US Constitution needs major revitalizing. The USA is the 2nd oldest government in the world. It's no wonder that we lag behind other modern countries in democracy and laws preventing abuses of power.

Anytime is a good time for a constitutional convention! In fact we might be 200 years late!

They won't do it. Ever. Despite being blatantly anti-democratic, the US Consitution is America's sacred cow, worshipped by the very people it disenfranchises.

Oh, I forgot to mention the “after the violent and bloody socialist revolution “ part. I always take that as a given. Silly old me.

The problem was that they were Russian. I am sure Marx would agree.

They are barbarians. Even now, they approve of Putin and the war. A million died fighting Ukraine. Almost a complete generation eliminated And still, it is not enough for them to realise that it should end. Glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦 Glory to the Heroes of all nations who fought against evil.

"Citizens United is definitely a major problem" It's THE problem. You won't accomplish anything important as long as we allow endless money to be poured into races even by corporations.

It's the source of much problems but it's not the root cause. The court extended 1st Amendment free speech protections to corporations and unions. Articles 1, 2, & 3 have failed. 9th Amendment is weakly interpreted. 14th Amendment has failed. 22nd won't work. All is wide open for abuse.

Well, you're not wrong but you can't do any of that without money and Citizens United allows corporations to pour unlimited money into elections. The last time Collins was up for election, they collectively spent $200 million dollars on a flipping Maine Senate race. It shattered the record.

This kind of behaviour is illegal in other developed nations and should be.

It should be a serious felony but instead we made it the way we elect people. Last year an Israel PR PAC spent $100 million dollars on primary races to get pro-Israel candidates for both parties. I don't think we can fix anything until we take money out of our issues. Sadly that's not the USA.

We have to start our improvements somewhere. Limiting the $ and the idea that corporations are person/people is one good place.

It's the way you buy public offices. It's called corruption. Nobody wins at that game.

Certainly, I have no problem with meaningful updates to the Constitution or new laws to supplement it. Changing the Constitution is a slow, heavy lift. Lots if directions to fight. My initial comment was aimed at getting the felon out of power or at least neuter him.

The US constitution is MEANT to be updated. This has always been part of its intention: to be a living document. The fact that Americans have placed it on a pedestal like a frail little doll has been to our own detriment, and has proven why the US constitution must be a living document.

Came here to say the same. Unfortunately when we recently tried to change ours in Australia (notoriously difficult to do) MAGA propaganda got in about the ‘sacredness’ of the document & derailed it. We shocked ourselves (I like to think) with that outcome & voted anti-MAGA style gov at next election

If you mean the oldest continuous parliamentary democracy, the usual answer is Iceland, where the Althing was founded in 930 CE and still functions today (though its form has changed over the centuries).

I am referencing the List of sovereign states by date of formation. Taking into account Date of current form of government and Acquisition of sovereignty, San Marino is the oldest at 1600 with the Constitution of San Marino. Vatican City would be older but sovereignty date is 7 June 1929.
