First morning in Manitowoc I went to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. Lots of great displays on shipbuilding and shipwrecks. They also have a World War II submarine.

An elevated look into a downstairs section of the maritime museum, containing false building facades that look like old shipbuilders, and a large wooden section of a ship hull. A look at several types of sailboats that were built in Manitowoc. The USS Cobia, a WWII submarine that sits in the water outside the museum, looking at it from the aft and also showing the gang plank that provides access. The USS Cobia viewed from the bow.

After the museum it was off to the harbor, which has some great parks and walking trails.

A beach and rocky shoreline with part of a city in the distance. A marina full of small sailboats, looking down the pier in between two rows. A rocky jetty sticks out into the harbor forming the entrance to the marina. A boat heads out of the harbor with city buildings in the background.

There were two reasons I wanted to visit the Manitowoc harbor. The first was to walk out to this lighthouse.

A lighthouse is visible in the background. In the foreground is a shoreline full of birds in front of a thick line of flowering plants. A closer view of the lighthouse that sticks out into the harbor,p. Two people walk along a concrete jetty leading to the lighthouse. A view looking up from the bottom level of the lighthouse. There are four levels with a large light array for ships at the top.

Reason 2 to visit the harbor was to watch the ferry from Michigan come in.

The S.S. Badger car ferry approaching the Manitowoc harbor entrance. The ferry passing by the lighthouse. The back part of the car ferry lifting up as it comes in to dock. The ferry backs into the landing jetty after turning around in the harbor.

Spent 3 days walking all over Road America. My feet hurt after, but it was well worth it. It’s a great facility with so many good places to watch from.

After 3 days at the track it was time to head home, but there were still a few things to see along the way. First up was a quick stop to look at Lake Winnebago.

Stopped for lunch in Galena, Illinois, there’s a house here that was gifted to Ulysses S. Grant after he won the Civil War, plus a lot of other neat old buildings.

The last big stop on my summer road trip was the Strategic Aird Command Museum just outside Omaha, Nebraska. They tons of interesting planes here, including rare ones like an SR-71 Blackbird, a B-17 and a B-29.
