For future use... the Merlin ID app is pretty great for identifying different birds by their sounds. I love using it. Even if it makes my husband crazy every time I tell him, I heard a new one in the yard. (Which is apparently more often than I thought it would be.)

Somewhere down Bungambrawatha Land there was apparently someone who played the flute. The story goes the lyrebirds picked up the melodies he played, so he taught them the countermelodies too. So in that forest is known to play little bits of Mozart, as they pass the noises through the community.

Had a resident female for a few years (we called her Risk). Babies so cute! Our dog (who would chase red squirrels) ignored her/treated her like something that belonged. Free-ranging cats and foxes are all around, though. Have not seen one in the yard for a while. They are everywhere, here, though.

I love Merlin! It is the great-great-grandchild of this, which I love. Best stocking stuffer ever. I learned almost nothing about birds from the Audubon Bird Call whistle except that my attempts to play bird calls were ineffective b/c I can’t carry, let alone reproduce, a tune.

So frog and toad species have unique calls, just like bird species. You can do audio detection surveys for them just by learning the species in your area and then going out for a listen. We do presence/absence survey points here in California as a way of assessing distributions. ✌🏼

I started using Merlin to ID bird calls when I found out that mountain lions make bird-like chirping noises, and a cougar had been spotted on the trail I walk my dogs on. If Merlin doesn’t recognize it, I assume it’s either an angry chipmunk or just a signal that it’s time to get off the trail.

I work on the same property as my house. I own a peacock who chills in my backyard with my dogs. Clients have come back in, after several wasted minutes trying to identify his call, asking if I knew what that bird in the woods was making that noise. We're in Canada, btw, so he's not a native here.

I KNOW. That's the best part. My middle son's obsession was frogs for a good decade. I still carefully check all pockets for frog friends before doing laundry, even though he doesn't live with me. I almost miss laundry day hoppy surprises.

In high school, I was an inaugural citizen volunteer for the Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources Frog and Toad Survey (it helps chart ecological health). You have to memorize like 12 calls, since that's how many species there are in Michigan! I think the Cope's is a subspecies with a higher call.

Also, not to go down memory lane, but our official government recordings of frog and toad calls to train our ears was distributed on CASSETTE TAPE! 😆 This was like late 1990s. Announcer voice after call: "That, was the Cope's Grey Tree Frog."

I still have a similar cassette tape. One side IDed frogs. The other side was just frogs. I used to quietly play that side when having guests- to drown out the nearby interstate freeway noise. Guests often commented on how cool it was to visit us "in the country" and hear frogs. 😀 🐸

The study in Minnesota ran 1996—2002, after a pilot program in 1993. I think study was nationwide. From the study intro: The Minnesota Frog and Toad Calling Survey (MFTCS) was developed in response to concern over the potential for population declines in Minnesota’s fourteen frog and toad species.

I just looked it up & listened, thanks to your post. Seems I've been hearing the Eastern Grey Tree Frog here, such a sweet warble, usually in the evening! By sight it's Cope's "twin," but the call is the tell. I'd thought we had a tropical bird in the yard! 🤭 These & spring peepers are THE best!
