does Drew Ensign go home to his wife every night and say “hi honey, I had a great day lying to the court so that the US government could murder children”? I mean how exactly do you even begin to live with yourself

Ensign was likely facing a contempt charge over his role in the secret CECOT flight. So perhaps he should be saying “hi honey my career as an attorney is over”
Seriously though. I have all sorts of intellectual paradigms for understanding why and how there are people like that, but still I really can't imagine BEING like that.
Yes. So dirty and disgusting. If we get through this we need to revamp ethics education for all lawyers and disbar the lot of these liars.
I can model these people and how they’ll act well enough but i like cannot emphasize with them in a inhabit-their-mind kinda way its just so fucking alien how is someone okay with this
EXACTLY!!! bsky.app/profile/gabb...
I have a really hard time with this too. I kind of can’t imagine they love their own kids in a genuine way. Like maybe in a really toxic proprietary way.

Ownership model of child rearing
I keep telling myself there must be some truly impressive compartmentalization efforts going on in there. Working the abstract problem your peers will clap for without ever allowing yourself to actually contemplate even the most direct and intended consequences.
Well, ya know how every accusation is a confession? They've accused the dems of demonic posession. So.
Drew's wife: So what happened to the children? Drew (removing tie): What children?
He thinks he’s saving the white race and that’s all he needs to justify anything
how does every single time he says "that's what I have been told" the entire courtroom not erupt, including judge, bailiff, and recording secretary, with "told by who motherfucker?"
Every generation gets its own John Yoo.
Drew Ensign has been made slightly famous by these court appearances and I hope it haunts his professional career until he dies
I hope his professional career ceases to exists and he's reduced to sweeping floors but that's just me.
In prison
Prisons are bad and we shouldn't have them. Just expropriate the bastards and render them equals with everyone else.
Fair ideally we don't have them.
infamous
I think that’s our problem: there are truckloads of Drew Ensigns willing to be an accomplice to murder but our side finds that hard to believe. They are monsters in five thousand dollar suits and we have to take them seriously.
I think too many people when confronted with objective evil find it too emotionally difficult to acknowledge and so dismiss it as a misunderstanding or mental illness when it really is just a villain standing in front of you taking delight in villainous, fiendish things like cruelty & brutality.
Like, I do not care that Pol Pot didn't get enough love as a child, or whatever. At some point, "hurt people hurt people" becomes an excuse. We are responsible for our actions, and inflicting harm on someone else because it makes you feel better is a conscious fucking CHOICE.
This.
“I had a great day securing the existence of our people and a future for white children”
I believe these people think of themselves as heroes, that they're doing *difficult, necessary work* that others might not be strong enough to do. That they can see the Big Picture and not be weak. My basis for this belief is that that's what the people committing the Holocaust thought.
He probably practices the "you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall" speech in the mirror every day.
“defending America”
she works for a trumpy law firm herself, so i don’t expect she asks many questions
Means they both see Guatemalan children as less than human.
yeah I mean Katie Miller is just as evil as Stephen they’re all monsters
I'm just trying to imagine the mindset of a Guatemalan child who has successfully emigrated, fleeing abuse or neglect in their own home to a place they regarded as safe enough, telling them we are sending you back there and starting the flight before turning around and my fucking rage has no bounds
Some of them might not be fleeing neglect or abuse in their home but instead child trafficking rings that their parents can’t protect them from. They escaped from slavers and could stay here and go to school but they have to go back to be enslaved or killed because they are not white.
to make those decisions and execute them successfully, betting on the reputation of this country in the process, by a child, and to have this done to them. it defies all conception of honor.
A small percentage of women watched or reacted against watching the handmaid’s tale and decided they were going to be Wives no matter, not sex slaves. There will always be the type that want to be collaborators and think they are being individually rational
I don't know how a surprisingly large number of people live with themselves
No empathy makes it easy.
He thinks they're vermin and his wife probably agrees with him.
They’re living their dream, hurting the people they hate while we can’t stop them, which makes them love it even more because they want to do this stuff to us too. This is who conservatives have always been and why bipartisanship and isle reaching are genuinely obscene.
They just cash the checks and laugh. These people believe in nothing and everything is just a game to them.
There are very strong incentives on the right to be cartoonishly evil. Also, these people genuinely enjoy it.
I imagine he does and his wife cheers him on with a fist pump. "Fuck yeah!"
Not exaggerating when I say these people should all be in the hague for this shit
Ensign: "I'm deporting hundreds of kids to an uncertain and dangerous future!" Family: "Are they brown people, Daddy? Did you get them all? High five!" That's how.
I'm more interested in seeing how the DoJ functions without him, since he appears to be their only lawyer.
"I am representing my client." "It's the justice system's job to figure out whether or not that's convincing."
If they had any self-awareness, they'd eat a bullet
People as things. That’s what he sees. People as things.
We're in a place where an academic study of the inner lives of horrible fascists is possible just because there's so many of them.
"How was work today, dear?" "Awful, the mean judge wouldn't let me send children to a country they've never been to! She even said I had to give each one a hearing first!"
Why do you think the White House drug problem is so bad?
Part of my job is getting into the mindset of the other side so i can better anticipate their arguments. I can't here. The dehumanization required is just too alien.
I was thinking about this earlier and the only two options I can come up with is: 1) he's a soulless ghoul wearing a human husk, or 2) he has a shipping container packed full of antacid in his driveway.
"some people are less human than others" is a mindset. any old medical text on treating minorities—the cognitively disabled, black people, women—makes it pretty plain that they're not considered the same kind of human. their kids aren't kids like your kids; just eggs in a nest that needs spraying.
as such, "in the dead of night, i'm shipping these kids back to a land they fear & sending these kids somewhere they can't get their cancer meds" carries the same emotional weight as throwing a spider out the front door &, in many cases, pride at having gotten a bug out of the house.
and if it's not clear, the sheer force of the unbridled hatred i have for people who live in this mindset is occasionally debilitating, and has probably corroded what some people would call my "soul" and possibly made me a worse person.
It's definitely been corroding mine this year. Before this year I didn't hate anyone. That I do now really sucks and makes me resent them even more.
It’s understandable to hate the people who send children to death or enslavement but I’m avoiding leaning into it too hard because it seems to have terrible effects on people—though it might be fine. I don’t know. It’s just an observation.
i think the corrosive part comes when there’s no room in your life for anything else, which is a thing i have failed to keep in balance from time to time. no amount of contempt for these people is sufficient. but there should be something else in your life besides contempt.
Excellent point. Yes. Don’t let the hate crowd out all the love.
they’ve always been here & america is built on this. the renewed brazenness bothers me less than very few people substantively pushing back & instead rubbernecking, thinking “it’ll pass soon,” but that brazenness means we rarely get 5 minutes to not stare them in the face, even in our own spaces.
