Modesto is really getting hammered by outside demand that they don't reap the benefits of (because the commercial tax base is 100 miles away) and it's not like living there is a great deal of people working in the Bay Area either! nobody's winning

To be clear, I'm sympathetic to the argument that rural/exurban communities are not set up to handle large sudden increases in population!
