The guy who tariffed lumber, who is trying to deport the construction workforce, and who campaigned on his opposition to Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing does not actually care about bringing down housing prices.
It takes a lot for deportation cases to even make it out of the immigration “court” system into real courts where people have a right to lawyers and to translators that actually speak the right language and such. There’s likely a lot more cases we don’t hear about.

it’s not painless we put those areas in the bill because we think there are good opportunities for more transit oriented housing but I’d say a flesh wound moreso than a gut wound

Modesto is really getting hammered by outside demand that they don't reap the benefits of (because the commercial tax base is 100 miles away) and it's not like living there is a great deal of people working in the Bay Area either! nobody's winning

the state has a pretty established process for mapping fire hazard at this point the historic stuff… definitely stickier, but we are aware of the issues that have arisen with this for other bills and worked to address them

Berkeley will almost certainly qualify for deferral (based on their middle housing allowing >50% of what SB 79 does), and then easily meet the standards for a local alternative plan
where are these acres of land near transit in Oakland that ban multifamily housing and have FAR limits of 0.55? Oakland’s missing middle rezone allows multifamily housing (25-43 dua) throughout the flats and doesn’t really regulate FAR
I kinda doubt SB 79 will ever apply within Berkeley tbh
Oakland can do more within its own boundaries, but no city can solve the housing crisis on its own State action ensures that all cities are rowing together
