Given the theme of the movie, perhaps transformers were the inspiration for the alien language in Arrival.

I can't believe they made a whole movie inspired by alien intelligences built on complex self-attending architectures—and then found out they scale so well they now make a new iteration every couple of years.

This would be great to issue a correction mostly because it's too tempting & juicy of a story: "SciFi inspires what leads to LLMs!" I frankly can see this evolving into 'an interesting fact' (of course not true) if not resolved quickly
