One extraordinary thing about Pritzker's speech: saying this won't last forever and justice will eventually find the perpetrators. Shouldn't have stood out so much. But did, because way too many US elites in politics, media, business, etc. are acting like it's popular and permanent. It's neither.

It feels like there's been a widespread belief that there's a one-way leftward ratchet in politics, always towards more civil rights, more social safety net, we can't go back, when in reality the ratchet has been rightward: more cops, more guns, more prisons, more cruelty, more Big Brother.

I think the Trump regime is so overconfident that it will stumble into a tipping point that will cause their benign supporters to defect. I don't think they can suppress the entire nation. It's simply too big, too distributed and too diverse.

Sure there is. Nothing lasts forever and all fascist movements have collapsed in on themselves. This one will too. Might not be fast, will do a lot of damage before then, and we’ll never go back to exactly how things were. But permanent this is not.

I have to wonder if Trump is looking at the Guard deployment to DC, where he doesn't have the same constraints on what he has the guard do, there are a million Federal buildings, he can order the DC police around and they're picking up trash, mulching and looking bored at a train station...

If they DID send the guard to Chicago and a court limited them to what they had in LA (guarding federal buildings, protecting federal officers), there are like 5 big Federal buildings and no border to guard, so they'd REALLY be twiddling their thumbs here.
