Michael Porter Jr: good example of an average starting player on a championship contender who got grossly overpaid, & consequently his team was stuck with him for longer than it wanted, nobody offering anything of value for Porter Jr until this past offseason I expect the same with NYK and Bridges

I was going to say "guy you have to pay maybe more than you would like but it's worth it because you win the title"

But was it worth it? No way Denver offered Porter Jr that monster extension one year before Porter Jr hit free agency and despite the fact that Porter Jr had just injured himself where he was going to miss the entire upcoming season Had Denver waited, could have re-signed him for much less

Or they could have pissed him off and lost him in free agency like Dallas did with Jaylen Brunson. Was it a negative value contract yes, but obviously it wasn't unmovable you want to title with him and your setup to contend again this season. Cost of doing business imo

Huge difference between a guy approaching RFA and one approaching UFA in an offseason with lots of projected cap space teams. The MPJ extension is from a team perspective one of the worst deals since the cap spike.

To the point that even comparing the two should make you stop and think.

I forgot that it was restricted versus unrestricted that's a valid point. But playing hardball with your rfas can cause real problems, just look at Golden State right now.

Bridges is a much much better defender his biggest strength on the offensive end is the mid range. With his high release and ability to shoot on the fade he is a shot maker. Porter Jr is almost exclusively a CnS 3 point shooter. Sorry but Bridges his just better. Bad comparison

I'm not saying that their games are similar I'm saying that their contract situations are.

They have similar contract. One is better and has a more versatile skill set. That matters

Not for the purposes of this conversation. I agree with you that Bridges is the better player but that's not what we're talking about.

The Knicks aren’t tankers how good Bridges is and what he can do on the court is central evaluating the Knicks decision to pay him.

My original point was that sometimes a contender overpaying a role player can lead to a championship and therefore be justified. This isn't a player comp conversation.

Apologies. I thought I was talking to “Robbie”.

Their contract situations aren’t at all the same. Again, year out from RFA very different from year out from UFA, before we get into the relative injury risk factors of the two players.

How many other players in MPjs draft class got extended that same year?

No idea off the top of my head, but how many of them was as big an injury risk? It wasn’t even (totally) about the money with MPJ, it was taking on the risk of doing it a year early. They sort of got away with it, but they flirted with absolute disaster
