I was going to say "guy you have to pay maybe more than you would like but it's worth it because you win the title"

But was it worth it? No way Denver offered Porter Jr that monster extension one year before Porter Jr hit free agency and despite the fact that Porter Jr had just injured himself where he was going to miss the entire upcoming season Had Denver waited, could have re-signed him for much less
Or they could have pissed him off and lost him in free agency like Dallas did with Jaylen Brunson. Was it a negative value contract yes, but obviously it wasn't unmovable you want to title with him and your setup to contend again this season. Cost of doing business imo
Huge difference between a guy approaching RFA and one approaching UFA in an offseason with lots of projected cap space teams. The MPJ extension is from a team perspective one of the worst deals since the cap spike.
To the point that even comparing the two should make you stop and think.
I forgot that it was restricted versus unrestricted that's a valid point. But playing hardball with your rfas can cause real problems, just look at Golden State right now.
