Those costs just shut the door to higher education for a huge swath of young people. Not good for the health of our democracy, nor for the hope of those young people fulfilling their aspirations.

You’re right. But under our extractive, exploitative capitalist system, that’s intentional on the part of its truest beneficiaries. Undereducated citizens or those overburdened with debt may feel forced to take whatever work is available at great cost to them but that benefits the capitalist.
