Like a sonic boom? I used to live near an airport and could definitely tell when a pilot screwed up the approach by a sudden roar of engines going to 100%

No. It was that high pitched sound of a plane or bomb dropping. Sometimes they do test flights and drop from the stratosphere so maybe it was that.
