Biden smoked him because the Democratic Party intervened (Sanders is technically an independent that caucuses with Democrats). Perspective of a truly baffled independent as I've watched the Democratic Party hurt themselves by playing it safe.
Biden smoked him bc Jim Clyburn endorsed Biden at the last minute. The D electorate did not know Sanders well, so the endorsement was key. If Clyburn had remained neutral, we would have seen a very different outcome.
