The Many Saints of Newark has many detractors, but I think it's worth watching just for Ray Liotta in his last great performance -- as two very different identical twins. His face & voice when he tells Alessandro Nivola "it's the wanting" is burned into my mind.

The "beep baseball" fantasy is equally etched into my permanent memory.

If you haven't watched BLACK BIRD on AppleTV, Liotta is absolutely incredible in that, too.

The casting was great (esp. Farmiga as Livia, Corey Stoll as Junior) and so was Liotta, and there were a few excellent moments, but there was a lot of cringe-worthy on-the-nose fan service in it as well

it's a messy, shaggy movie, but the good stuff -- the drowning scene, Liotta, Talia Balsam and Vera Farmiga's meeting at the high school -- is GOOD

I like Dickie. I mean, as a character. He wants to feel and think like a moral person but is not wired for it. He's so close to a breakthrough the whole time. He reminds me of Macbeth.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. I always thought the complaints about it not slavishly following the memories we were told in the show is a strange one, due to how often our memories are separate from reality. Yeah, there are some continuity issues with character ages… but eh. It’s got the spirit.

"I found the movie fascinating because it detaches series creator David Chase’s characters from their original context and treats them as mythology that can be retold, reinterpreted, and revised." www.vulture.com/2021/10/deco...

I’ve never seen it but I’m for sure going to watch it when I finish this rewatch of THE SOPRANOS. It came along at that time when you had this, DEADWOOD: THE MOVIE, and EL CAMINO, all feature film epilogues of acclaimed series met with varying degrees both acclaim and shrugs. Fascinating era.

He’s really fantastic and the arrival of the second Liotta immediately erased any qualms I had about how big the first one was

As much as I loved Ray Liotta, I think I still took him for granted. His performances in Many Saints make for a perfect showcase of his talent.

It’s great and think those who don’t like it are definitely in the “less yakking, more whacking crowd”, it’s undeniably 100% pure Chase

I thought it was crap, and I prefer the yakking over whacking 🤷🏻‍♂️ I also thought they wasted a really great casting with Vera Farmiga. They gave her literally almost nothing to work with with that script

Fair enough, I’ve seen it three times and my only issue with it is the pointless voiceover which felt pure studio note. I thought Farmiga was great also.

Liotta made so many movies worth watching. I walked out of COPLAND mostly disappointed, except for Liotta just living in his portrayal of the greasy cop who I’m sure was written as clinging to some shred of morality, but I’m pretty sure he just wanted to stick it to Keitel and those other mf’ers.
