This is why Democrats need to stop trying to move right to appeal to moderate Republicans. They'll get fed up and come our way eventually if they're ever going to.

If you told me 13 years later we would actually be far *worse* off in ALL of the things Will mentions. But still #1 in Defense spending! I agree on Yosemite, it is beautiful. and a few things in his soliloquy.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTjM...
Neocons started out as Trotskyists and it appears some are reverting back as they age. I don’t know what to make of it.
Time is a flat circle
They accepted that liberal democracy was as good as society was going to get but kept the revolutionary attitudes of their Trotskyist days, just now directed outwards towards non-liberal democracies. That made them hawks aligned with the right. But now Trump threatens liberal democracy at home...
They made such a big deal about removing Saddam, it must’ve been one hell of a mindtrip to then see their party elevate an American Saddam to the WH, right down to the same taste in tacky gold furniture.
NGL it isn't great
Day 2: Kill all maga, and Day 3 we escalate
Bill fuckin Krisol is talking more sense than people in the party!
Wild.
Quoting Jim Hightower FFS.
I went from being a guy the Koch Brothers sent to grad school to being a guy who doodles guillotines in the margins of his work memos.
TBF, They were not part of the would-be fascists, but the Capitalists, and have been surprised they were not all one big happy fleet, under that banner.
+1
Day 2 - Rebalance the Supreme Court because everything you do first and after may not stand.
Trump (or Vance if he dies) will really love that as they get to pick every single new justice. The last thing we want to do now is expand the court.
This idea might work as a bandaid. Would only need 50 votes to reconfirm them all as SCOTUS Justices bsky.app/profile/ques...
@schumer.senate.gov and @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social reading this
today I learned that although former presidents get secret service for life, former VPs don't.
It came up before with Dick Cheney (Obama extended his protection) but the story got a lot less play. There were also at least three rounds of media chatter about former presidents losing protection - when Nixon gave his up, when Congress took away lifetime coverage, and when Obama restored it.
Most people can’t even name/id the VP while in office, why would taxpayers continue to foot the bill to cover unneeded overpriced security by an already overstretched Secret Service. After SS ends former protectees can hire private security. For many, Secret Service is more about vanity image-boost
"there is nothing in the middle of the road but yellow lines and dead armadillos" is an absolute banger and belongs on either a battle jacket or a very punk cross stitch sampler
Coined by the great Jim Hightower
My brain immediately goes "you could make a hilarious bedspread out of that". Imagine a dark grey blanket with yellow lines and a flattened armadillo. The armadillo's middle is flat to the blanket but the two ends are lightly stuffed plushies.
If I had enough polarfleece and wanted to spend the rest of my life cleaning fluff out of my sewing machine, I would make this
I’ll fund the kickstarter
Unfortunately I'm in the UK, so we'd be hit by tariffs unless the tangerine tyrant pops his clogs and you get someone sensible in charge to reverse them. The only workaround I can think of is once I've developed a pattern, selling it as a digital download in the US
That way you could support your local sewists and have it made domestically
Need a global DB for this shit. Like now. I been thinking for years about what a federated cooperative inside-out employment agency might look like.
Could probably build it off of ActivityPub... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Activit...
Once for a Halloween party, I took a loaf of French bread and made a 'road kill sandwich'. Shaped meatloaf into an animal body with a flat middle where it got 'ran over'. Squirted on ketchup.
🤯 What?
It's funny that in 2012 every Republican presidential candidate from far-right to moderate assailed Romney for what he did at Bain to carve up businesses for profit at the expense of workers but when Trump literally does the same thing to America they cheer him on
Trump won. They like that
I mean spilling out your moves in the public just gets us closer to us not having elections.
Literally anything about American politics in 2025 that 2012 you would have believed?
Stevens saw the sickness spread through the GOP up close. He gets it, unlike Dems.
@democrats.senate.gov @housedemocrats.bsky.social let’s roll.
Nor I.
Not a Romney fan but he was never totally stupid. You can work with people who aren’t stupid. There’s room to maneuver
he's also a mormon which means he's easily indoctrinable
I mean, he’s not wrong. It’d be nice to see the Dems lace up and come out swinging.
If you told that to Mr Stevens in 2012, he wouldn't have believed it either.
His book "It Was All A Lie" is actually worth a read on how he got here; it's a lot more introspective than I thought it would be.
NATIONWIDE PROTESTS September 1st on LABOR DAY. Stand up for America!! Show Up!! Find a protest near you by clicking findaprotest.info. Show your photos or videos tomorrow. Start putting out your signs in your yards. Show courage! Resist! No shows don't deserve to complain if we lose this shitshow
Finally, someone mentions nationalizing starlink. It's in our national interests way more than Intel. Yes, chips are important, but the CHIPS Act was helping, so there was no need to nationalize. Starlink is important on the battlefield and important for our allies. It should be under US control.
To be clear, I'm not saying we should nationalize it, but with starlinks national security importance for both the US and our allies to the US, plus Musk's erratic behavior, why has no one mentioned it now that Trump took ownership of Intel? I'd argue starlink has more strategic importance.
most of the people i knew growing up or in my 30s who were national security conservatives are more or less on the communist spectrum now. sometimes you have to see capitalism off the rails to realize "actually, no; this doesn't work at all"
It’s his mea culpa era - seriously he finally came to accept the “southern strategy” politics of the GOP and how it is dangerous for the stability of our country. Much like Lee Atwater. www.thenation.com/article/arch...
After decades of saying that the GOP should view the Democrats like this, this is interesting bc only now does he see that the GOP ideology was always leading here.
29, sorry to ask, but this is 2025 this is a real post ? cause if so . . wow
If Trump and Romney were members of the same political party, he wouldn’t be.
Romney believed in mostly wrong things but at least he actually believed in something.
I didn’t say he wasn’t a politician. Nor a good person. Nor right. But he did have some convictions he held to.
Do Americans actually believe that Trump will allow midterm elections? Or any elections that aren't so corrupted that they're meaningless? Wow!
It's a country of 340 million people and Trump does not control all of it despite your fatalism. Wow!
Yeah elections are managed by state and local governments, so it would be very difficult to simply cancel them. Whether the Republicans will accept the results is a different question.
I'm more worried about government agent intimidation in blue-leaning polling places than canceled elections - or, as you say, people in power not accepting the results. US elections will definitely continue to be flawed and only partially competitive.
No shortage of things to be worried about, that’s for sure!
The actual centrist position is antifascist.
This is pure fantasy. Schumer and Senate Dems are *still* voting for Trump cabinet picks.
there may be some turnover in the next year and change
Democrats left Schumer and Pelosi in charge after Trump won the first time. They ain’t changing shit.
There could also be Manchins of the left who can make demands of leadership
Be the change lol (don't vote for sympathizers)
Schumer's term doesn't naturally end until 2029. I'm praying for something unnatural to happen to his term without it being a monkey paw situation
He could be removed from leadership any time.
what would be wrong if the cause was natural
Because the natural end to his term is in 2029, and we need a better fighter/Senate Minority leader to fight off Trump than this oafish ineffectual fool. You may be thinking of a natural end to something other than his term.
Correct and Schumer is lying about it here on BlueSky too.
Dems like schumer have absolutely shit the bed with their dumbfounding response to a very real authoritarian takeover of their country happening on their watch. I don't understand. Are they in denial about what's going on or something? Have they forgotten what their job is?
Unsurprisingly, he's polling terribly. You would hope the guy has the sense and decency to read the room and put his party and country first by not running for reelection. But also that would be out of character for a complacent and entitled politician like Schumer. I guess we'll see...
The evils of Vote Blue No Matter Who. Schumer doesn't think someone will be able to run against him. If he gets primaried he thinks the DNC will destroy any challenger. In the general nobody in New York will vote for a Republican. He is accountable to nobody and acts like it. That's caused by VBNMW
Politicians should be scared of their constituents. Schumer should be scared of enough Dems not showing up (or voting third-party) that he loses his seat. He's not scared, because the VBNMW "movement" has said a Republican can run with a (D) next to their name and you are OBLIGATED to vote for them
Chuck is only scared of the Baileys, his imaginary constituents
I think you've got it wrong. When establishment Dems lose, their response lately has been to blame the left/protest voters/activist groups. They become more spiteful, not more open to, progressivism. Harris's loss provoked many into calling for Dems to excise pro-trans and pro-Palestine people.
Voting for any and every Democrat doesn't make them more progressive or competent fighters on its own, sure. But refusal to vote for Democrats has been shown to move their establishment *to the right* and make everything *worse*.
I think we're saying the same thing. He's spiteful BECAUSE he knows the DNC will defend him and because he isn't scared of losing his seat. He's mad at people being "annoying" by attempting to hold him accountable, and he is accountable to nobody. Hence he punches left to try to shut them up
But if he were to lose, establishment Dems who remain in positions of power wouldn't move to back a progressive replacement next election cycle. They would blame the left again, refusing to learn the lesson you want them to learn, repeat cycle into an infinite death spiral for democracy.
Lose the general*, I should clarify. I 100% support a progressive primary challenger against him. But I don't think letting a Republican win one of NY's Senate seats would move the Dems in a positive direction.
They’re soft, not built for this.
bsky.app/profile/jlra...
To be clear I agree that Schumer should be doing much more, and the fact that any Dems voted for any of Trump's cabinet nominees is at best deeply disappointing, but he's not doing nothing, either
An article by the R senate majority whip vs looking at the data yourself. Time between appointment and confirmation has been going up for decades. You can also look at which dems actually voted for which noms. bsky.app/profile/thew...
Yep. Democrats exist to fight the left not the fascists. 2027 will finally prove that.
After “This is pure fantasy.” I thought you were going to write: “IF Democrates take the house.”
The last cabinet confirmation was March 11th. Mike Walz is up for a vote for UN Ambassador soon.
Schumer's voting record on appointments is almost all no's except for like 2.
Why are there even 2? And one of those two was goddamn Marco Rubio
Don't confuse people with facts.
He can’t or won’t control his caucus. There is always somebody voting for Trump. Worse than useless leadership. Voters do not want this endless capitulation. He covered for Manchin and Sinema too.
I love a good radicalized moderate, they make for the best revolutionaries.
I'm seeing it with my own eyes and I still don't believe it.
The thing is. That guy's a conservative. He has an ideology. A bad ideology, but most ideologies overlap on some good ideas. The people in charge of the Democratic party have no ideology. They don't even have a liberal ideology, they have no beliefs at all. They beg CNN to tell them what to believe.
The people in charge of the Dem party are living too comfortably and their complacence prevents them from being disruptors. Time to get rid of all these outmoded geriatric f*cks like Schumer & Pelosi so the party can move forward. Term and age limits are needed.
In the words of Walter Sobchak: say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos!
Yup. Which is why so few of them come across as genuine. They’re literally reciting from a script, not stating their actual beliefs, and people can see right through it.
Exactly. Campaign consultants have coached Democratic Party politicians to do the "vote for me, I'm not as bad as they are" thing, and way too many have just taken the advice. Time for the party to stop going for the lowest common denominator.
There is a saying about a broken clock and to be fair Trump's regime is a different kind of bad.
Wouldn't it be weirdly ironic if these ideas come from more conservatives until Chuck Schumer's imaginary Long Island family starts telling him do abolish ICE.
Exactly. Their ideology is craving power. Fetterman & Torres are their avatars. A few have scruples. Most don’t. And they’ve served corporations & oligarchs to degree base became disgusted, handing gov to Trump/GQP. Gaza carnage & Biden claque fraud on public define them: no bottom—moral sewer rats.
The democrat ideology is self interest and maintaining the status quo, regardless of who suffers.
How can you tell if someone is secretly simping for the right? It's easy - they won't call the party by its proper name. They ALWAYS use the Rush Limbaugh-spread insult, with the last syllable sounding like 'rat'.
okay so like is your suggestion here that only right-wing sympathizers loathe the democrats enough to insult them because, uh fucking lmao?
Leftists have better insults than the fascist idiots.
This kind of whinging just makes everyone hate you more
That may be so, but they're still correct
No, they are not correct. They are an American dullard and a conservative. Those sorts of people are never right.
Wait...now I'm confused. Who were you saying is doing the whining above?
Yes, you are confused. The entire world, except dumb fuck Trumpland, sees liberals (yes liberalism as you understand it) as right wing and has done so for the last 300 years.
Oh, so I WASN'T confused and you WERE defending james using "democrat party" instead of the correct "democratic party" - just like the other shitty people who do that. So, yeah, I was right when i said traveller was correct. Thanks for clearing that up.
Don't waste time with people arguing about spelling or semantics like that.
Are you complaining about semantics and autocorrect errors here?
That ideology is called liberalism
We need an opposition party to stop what's happening. If the current Democratic beltway leadership and the DNC need to be kicked to the curb to get one, so be it, if you ask me.
That armadillo line is great
I’m still waiting for Mitt Romney to say it
Protect the most vulnerable of community’s @blacktranstexas.bsky.social Has been hospitalized from a physical attack from transphobic hate. They need a wheel chair after leaving hospital.
I wouldn’t have believed anyone either. Not about this
It's interesting to see that the Never Trump folks are among the most "kill the bastards" of the "elites" of the current Dem coalition.
They can read a room and aren't going to be the ones taking the heat when Democrats get back into power and don't do shit. It's easy to understand if you start from the premise that these never Trumpers are the same cynical self interested pricks they've been their whole lives.
Probably because they've been the closest to said bastards relative to the rest of the coalition
No, they just no longer have jobs to lose.
Ok these are nice symbolic actions, but the bills will all be vetoed
But Stuart Stevens quoting Jim Hightower is def wild
Stripping the savages of qualified immunity puts self-defense and justified homicide back on the table. It is not symbolic. As to your concern about legal niceties being an impenetrable roadblock, these are lawless times.
Oooooh these are lawless times No shit, sherlock
Its 100% symbolic because it will BE VETOED It will not be enacted into law Trump is the president and they will not have the votes to override his veto Like, this is 4th grade civics stuff
Kinda seems as if they think the #alleged left is worse than a basket of deplorables. I mean... [taps sign] @governor.ca.gov + @housedemocrats.bsky.social be like
Dissident movement?! These jokers can’t even act like an opposition party. #Democrats
I mean Romney sure ain't gonna do it.
Yes! Do as he says or we’re lost. 🙏
This guy knows more about what's going on than most establishment democrats
The Party of the Strongly Worded Letter? Fat chance.
💯
Wow.
A Democrat would never think the way he does, and that’s why they lose.
Isn't that the thing about Republicans? They want and understand how to take power. I think progressives want to be good and correct. We don't value ruthlessness. Stuart Steven's is willing to be ruthless.
He’s not wrong.
This timeline is fucking wild.
It's odd seeing how quickly the GOP sort of collapsed into this Trumpist cult. Or maybe it was just there under the surface, I'm not the expert here. But it is strange seeing such prominent GOP people from last decade swing round. Anyway, Stuart Stevens is right. The Democrats must be aggressive.
Shame that Democrats have a financial incentive to not learn anything from this
The lesson we need to teach Dems is that if they side with their finances and monied interests over their base, they'll wind up penniless and disgraced. I'll do my part to harass them out of office so they stop taking up all the space/oxygen needed to save the nation and the people.
Too many Dems are "let's agree on murdering the armadillos."
Romney has been the last decent Republican for a long time.
John McCain was up there as well.
Tell Trump that since he’s raking in the cash with his memecoin and other cons, he can pay for his own executive branch bullshit
tell him he's actually losing money by being president and would be more profitable if he quit
He is skimming off the top of every transaction made in the name of American ppl.
Day 1 - Remove Hakeem Jeffries
Kinda moot, since Jefferies ain't going to be Speaker, House minority leader, or in Congress past 2026 if Mamdani wins NYC mayor.
Jeffries is cooked regardless. Mamdani won his district. The DSA infrastructure is there for it and he’s going to be even less popular than Cuomo in 2026. A Ham Sandwich (D) could win a primary vs Jeffries (or Schumer or maybe even Gillebrand).
@democrats.org: but what about the parliamentarian????
The President would have to sign off on most or all of this. The Supreme Court would be brought in for some of it.
This guy after seeing his friends at The Lincoln Project move up into a different tax bracket by running a grift on gullible liberals.
Stuart Stevens is late to the side of angels but now that he’s here, I agree with him
I don't believe he is an angel. But I *do* believe his interests temporarily align with... ours? Basically the one thing we have in common is: we don't want people as dumb as Trump and his cronies running things.
My rule is, we welcome guys like Stevens to the fight but they don't get to be in charge of anything.
>dissident movement >give more money to Elon Musk 🤨
That should be signed by all dems the moment they win their primaries/elections.
Tbqh, BEFORE they enter a primary. No time now for milquetoast Dems.
I still don't.
Tangentially ... ... the gallows humor in the fact that some Republicans blame Romney's loss, or more specifically, how Democrats treated Romney in 2012, for why they vote and act like selfish, hateful, intentionally destructive fascists today 🤔😬😒
Nobody would have foreseen. Remember when Romney's comments doomed his campaign? Remember how innocent we all were back then?
Binders full of women. I like to fire people. They were certainly gaffes, but you are completely right. Compared to anything Trump and his henchpeople say on a daily basis..
I more mean the whole "poor people don't deserve fridges" kind of rhetoric.
Oh yes, there were plenty more.
Sarah Longwell and the other "moderates" at the Bulwark shoukd take note
Why are there not more vocal ex republicans? What happened to people like Jake Flake? They’re all cowering under their beds?
Nooooo... Honey, your party is the dissident movement. You really need to get your facts straight.
I had totally forgotten it became a book Is that wrong? books.google.com/books/about/...
Superb.
the democrats have proved they don't have the spine for this. they spent 4 years pussy footing around and this is the result
I... did. Did we forget Nasa? Fuckin', nationalize spacex and not criminally prosecute spacex.
i know this is political fan fiction, but i would still love to see it
The issue is that the manager knows way better what the Democrats have to do to protect the US (and frankly, the whole world) from Trumpism than the Democrat Oligarchy of Vichy.
Times change. People change. I bet if you'd told *him* this is something he'd say in the future that reaponae would've been nah, not me. Yet, here we are.
As an ex-New Yorker, if you had told me in 2012 that Donald Trump would be President, I would have laughed hysterically.
Does "Nationalize Starlink" mean "take it away from Musk and give it to NASA"? Because anyone suggesting any less can get fucked right alongside Elon and his dime store Bond villain aspirations.
Second conservative that is way further left than any establishment Dems.
Democrats can’t even come up with a unified position on genocides
Unfortunately, if they do get there they'll probably only do a Please Don't Be So Mean Mr President bill - and then fail to pass it because "moderates" think it's a bit much.
If only, right? Prosecute ICE and every 3rd party involved. Get that govt money back, with penalties and interest. Do real corruption investigations and take anyone and everyone suspected into custody immediately.
Good grief, I thought this guy was a *leftist* when I saw that post and that it was useless wishcasting. I mean, it still is, but coming from a REPUBLICAN it's way more impressive.
It’s wild, isn’t it?
The Overton Window has not just shifted but fallen out of the house entirely and rolled down a cliff to smash on the rocks below
Wow. Good for him.
if the dems get back in power they're probably going to give Elon another billion dollars
“There is nothing in the middle of the road but yellow lines and dead armadillos” is my new favorite line and battle cry.
!!!
I like this guy
I don't like the guy. But I like his suggested strategy.
And quoting Jim Hightower, no less.
Is he available to run the DNC?
See also Bill Krisol and Joe Walsh.
Walsh has still been on his fascist-lite shit but Kristol (I think?) is genuine
Agreed
Bill Kristol can burn. His PNAC led to a lot of deaths. I don't care if he's a Never-Trumper now.
And that’s how you know that today’s Democrats have devolved so far, that they have now passed 2012 Republicans on their right. 🙄
Red State Democrats and NeverTrumpers are in the same state of mind.
That actually looks like a good use of the first day.
Trump is still in the Epstein files
Please post everywhere Rep. Ro Khanna On September 3rd at 10:30am ET, Rep. Massie and I are hosting a press conference joined by survivors of Epstein and Maxwell's abuse — several of whom will be speaking out for the first time. The survivors deserve justice and the public deserves transparency.
I'm in a foul mood so let's me say this, all the leftists should fuck off to a remote island in the Indian ocean forever. They blasted people like Liz Cheney, Bill Kristol, and Stewart Stevens. Those horrible conservatives have bigger anti-facist, pro-democracy balls than any leftists I've seen.
And don't let me started on the Dem leadership pvssies and the pathetic Obama coterie. They can fuck off even further to Antartica or something.
“‘Heart of Gold’ put me in the middle of the road. Traveling there soon became a bore, so I headed for the ditch. A rougher ride, but I saw more interesting people…” ~Neil Young, 1977 @kennotsosmart.bsky.social
Please, if only for the shits and giggles, let's not go by the advice of former Republicans again? 2026 is going to be like 'we got the 'eats cats, eats dogs' guy! Everyone do everything he says' then 'it must have been because of the progressives that we lost.'
Counterpoint:We've been going high when they go low for decades. How well has that gone for us? When they go low, we need to put on some army boots and get a-stompin.
It’s kind of dumb, but the breaking of the norms I think has really broken these guys
MOTIVATIONAL FAMOUS QUOTES: "Christians, get out and vote. Just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore, you know what? Four more years, it’ll be fixed, it’ll be fine, you won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians" Candidate Donald Trump youtu.be/gE7xoHJkgvE?...
Some of these radical Never-Trumpers rn are like wandering ronin, masterless samurai looking for a honorable fight. And it is a bad time for the empire. The Shogun just stays inside his castle and never comes out. People say his brain is infected by devils. The Shogun says the people are not loyal.
The radical Never Trumpers were thrown overboard by The Heritage Foundation because they weren’t cruel enough and dared to question the idiot-emperor-in-waiting the HF planned to install.
ain't nobody showing up to the US with Black Ships tho
i don't think i have seen such ivocative imagery to describe the never trump posters before. thank you
lol I'm just ripping off the opening dialogue to "Shogun Assassin" (or the sample to the GZA's "Liquid Swords") www.youtube.com/watch?v=11Bl...
Hell yes. Wutang forever. Excellent cut from an excellent album.
Someone said this In response to a (half) joke I made, and I think it captures the sentiment well. bsky.app/profile/andr...
If these "Never Trumpers" want to become the 47 Ronin, including the part at the end where they preserve their honor after avenging their Lord, I'm all for it. But I doubt that's where they're going.
I did originally put in "an honorable death" but felt too on-the-nose
I am shocked to say, I agree with him. Too many people say when dems are in charge, they seem afraid to use their power. They need to stop worrying and ACT. Don't debate, and tell the "moderates" in the party to sit down, and buckle up. The country will be better for it
Well if right wing Republicans want them to do it they might actually try
He is proposing that Democrats act as an opposition party, something that is a no-brainer in a two-party system. As a Republican, Stevens knows that being opposition have little downside because whatever good or bad happens people usually credit it to the ruling party.
