how am i just now learning this about wild turkeys.
how am i just now learning this about wild turkeys.
I had no idea either!
I just showed my daughter a flock of wild turkeys in the St. Paul suburbs over the weekend, and she was amazed.
In my early 20s I lived in a house that set on the edge of a forested area and the turkeys would roost in the trees right outside my bedroom window. I can not tell you how surprised I was my 1st night there 😲
They sometimes roost in the trees in my garden. This, as you can imagine, freaks me out because they aren’t great flyers. Mind you, they are pretty damn scary when they are on the ground - they seem to have little fear.
They roost in the trees next to our house. At dusk if something makes one of them nervous (like wind or someone whistling), they gobble. Then ALL of them start doing it and it’s *hilarious*.
An excellent example of turkey group gobbles in trees — though I intentionally kicked this one off (please enjoy my attempt at a turkey sound 😉)
I have found my new ring tone.
Hahah the ring tone guaranteed to make everyone who hears it laugh
Ngl, I could watch this all evening.
Great work
Holy cow that's hilarious. 😁
They make me so happy 😁
This could have been one of the good episodes of The X Files.
lol I would have rewatched it so many times 😆
they are not so great at the flying thing…worse at coming down…need long runways…such as country roads…imagine that beast heading straight at your windshield…drifting…wobbling…
I hit one right in the middle of the windshield of my work truck a long time ago, it nearly broke through. Left a large crack and a perfect dust print on the glass.
Still traumatized by the time a pack of wild turkeys delayed me from getting my breakfast sandwich (and held hostage a bunch of others already inside) at a restaurant in DOWNTOWN Minneapolis.
I see them sleeping in the trees outside my bedroom window sometimes. Wild.
omg what??
I watched a flock go up into some trees for the night once. They went one at a time, and each turkey that went looked like it couldn't believe it was actually flying, and all the other turkeys watched looking like they couldn't believe it either, until it was their turn.
I still chuckle every time I think of that scene. The delivery was perfect.
I watch that episode every year at Thanksgiving. Best single episode of comedy television ever.
I should rewatch it. I haven't seen it in decades.
I'm amazed how well it holds up.
i’m astonished
Obviously! You only ever hear about people eating ground turkey, not tree turkey
womp womp
I never knew that either, even though I’m in an area full of wild turkeys.
Same here I had no clue
Still waiting for Harris to be out walking around after this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-Fv...
“Suburban” wild turkeys can be terrors
In this house we watch @wildkratts.com everyday at least one hour a day (or else) 😅🫣🫠 - highly recommend if looking to expand your animal knowledge
They roost in the very tall Douglas firs around our house and it’s quite unsettling
Don’t all questionable whiskeys famously hang out in tall trees? Or am I just making that up?
so now i have to check the trees for turkeys. great.
Yes-wild turkeys fly! I (and it) had a near death experience when one flew past my windshield (still hard to understand how)
i’m glad you both are ok
yes, it was a weird and scary event-they’re big!
At least you don't have to check the trees for sheep.
But only at night
Just go to the grocery store like everyone else
free country demands free tree grown turkey
You can tell they're ripe when they can't fly anymore.
I was hiking on a steep wooded mountainside and a big male took off and flew off the side. Ridiculously loud wing beating and a large amount of crashing into lower branches. I almost rolled down the mountain. Thought a tree was falling or a bear was running down the slope. Just a dinosaur.
They mostly roost on the ground in shrubbery, if that helps.
Turkeys which are also much smarter than food turkeys. Ages ago a family friend thought he was buying real turkeys - they were food turkeys. The entire flock drowned during a rainstorm. Due to looking up to see what was hitting them on top of their heads, mouths open. For the rest of their lives
It’s not a safe feeling to have thirty lb bird on a branch above your head.
I was also surprised to learn this! My friend describes them as “bowling balls with wings” which does not feel inaccurate!
