I am very concerned that the racism and Islamophobia being couched so aggressively in terms of "fighting antisemitism" is going to make the problem of fighting antisemitism much harder.

A few decades of neo-conservative and now entirely fascist zionists calling everything under the sun antisemitism was only ever going to have one outcome and I don't think it's an accident. They're not idiots, they are singularly ideologically driven.
you think jews are starting to get a reputation for excessive violence and aggression that may cause a backlash?
Seems extremely deliberate even!
We are very fortunate that the bigots have chosen a candidate as skilled and principled as Zohran as their target. A lesser politician would respond to these smears in a way that makes everything so much worse for both Jews and Muslims.
It’s almost like that was the point. Male antisemitism exclusively tied to support of Israel, and everything else is not.
Make, not male.
Which is infact part of the goal
Already is!
Meanwhile, the organizations and public figures most associated with "fighting antisemitism" are partnering with the 14/88 crowd. The entire political project is founded on misdirection that empowers antisemites.
Criticizing genocidal, far-right thugs like Netanyahu isn’t anti-Semitism, it’s basic human decency. Weaponizing anti-Semitism to shield war criminals is disgusting. It cheapens real anti-Semitism and fuels more hate. Replacing one form of oppression with another isn’t progress, it’s complicity.
I'd like to see a more full throated statement of the counter-argument from all sides: every religious minority in this country relies on our tradition of pluralism, and any erosion of that tradition threatens us all.
When antisemitism is not longer convenient for their goals, yes. The WASP calls of deciding who the "real" Jews are and how no "real" Jew would do X or Y is in lock step with all of this. Opportunists, all.
This is par for the course in American politics. Just by being Muslim in this country - forget about your politics, it becomes expedient for the powers that be to question your loyalty to Israel in the public sphere. "Fighting Antisemitism" is patently false. It is but a dog whistle.
If anything it makes actual overt hatred of American Jews more socially acceptable! If you can demonize one group and get away with it , it will spread !
Be nice if we stopped fighting over fairy tales altogether.
The fact that humans, especially Americans, tend to think exclusively in binaries has me very concerned for any future claims of antisemitism. The pro-Israel lobby is dangerous for Jews.
You can already see its polarizing use in the New York mayoral primary, how people use the word and what is ultimately meant by it is already eroded and eroding
Seems more feature than bug for the people doing the fuckery.
Feature, not bug It's not a coincidence that it allows far right anti-semites to use their support of the fascist Israeli government as an alibi for their anti-semitism
A Muslim New York Mayor with left-wing humanist politics poses no threat to American Jews. People coming to believe that there is an inherent and zero-sum conflict between Muslim Americans and Jewish Americans sure does though!
I can almost certainly guarantee that we American Jews would feel a lot safer in the US if more of the devout of this country were like our Muslim friends and neighbors and not like the Southern Baptists and the Mormons.
I think about this all the time
Yup, me too. And of course, a lot of this is deliberate: if the well is poisoned for American Jews, then Israel seems like the safe alternative.
The diaspora needs to come to the realization that to the extent Israel cares about them at all, it is as fodder for their ethnostate project.
And that very well may be the point.
I feel one outcome will be ‘if everything is antisemitism, nothing is’, which is bad when evangelical Christian Nationalists are in charge of the entirety of the US government
It's great that I have to hear "[x] is antisemitic!" and I genuinely have to ask myself if they're (((using these))) or if they just criticized an apartheid regime
