In 1989 I was very surprised to find "Edelweiss" from "The Sound of Music" being very popular in China. Maybe it was also a protest song?

I don’t know about that song, but in the 1989 protests in China, as in some earlier ones, students put new lyrics to Frere Jacques that mocked the authorities
