Excusing the inexcusable. The firing was political retribution for bad news. President’s own words.

Thanks for the shameless self promotion, Ray. Many respected scholars and practitioners have noted revision are common; so how did Ray manage so well in the past. So, exemplary leadership is terminating the leader of a department with no plan in place?

I'm not sure he's agreeing with the reason for the firing. I doubt it's the BLS director's fault the initial reports had to be adjusted down so much though. DOGE probably dumped half the people that were doing the surveys they use for the estimate.

Trump would have loved it if BLS had adopted @raydalioofficial.bsky.social methods and come out with the much worse numbers, 3 months ago. Good thinking Ray - Trump fired her for being too optimistic about the mess he made. Why didn't we think of that - maybe not enough ruthless honesty?

It would be nice to know what the recommendations would be to get the private sector to respond to the surveys faster? Should they be fined? If reporting on revisions could also more clearly spell out that they aren’t a failure of the initial data set, but of it being updated as more data comes in.

Ray Dalio @RayDalio I probably would have fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics too. .. That's because its process for making estimates is obviously obsolete and error-prone, and there is no good plan in the works for fixing it. The huge revisions in Friday's employment numbers are symptomatic of this, especially because the revisions brought the numbers toward private estimates that were in fact much better. I assure you that this is something that I know a lot about because of how I use data to follow the economy and bet on where it's going.

The entire narrative to paint the revisions and response rates as something terrible and fundamentally flawed is deeply disturbing. We’ve entered a world in which we make up a narrative after the fact and then try to spin it into truth. It was political retribution and that’s that. End of story.

Yeah, seeing the pretend 'discussion' on estimate quality is jarring. It isn't about it, because they don't even know how precise the estimates actually are. To compound it all, they also don't even know what results of these measurements mean, because a measure on its own is often not insightful

I would not have fired her. Large revisions suggest a need to improve the process, or delay reporting. Which would be more damaging to the credibility of the numbers: large revisions from a well-defined but imperfect process, or knowing that there was an overtly political appointee in charge?

Peter Ellis @freerangestats.info

The fact they aren't is interesting. Official stats support 3 types of decision-making: a) technocratic - eg Fed on interest rates b) democratic - eg vote out the govt that gave us unemployment, inflation c) private investment Maybe for c) *accurate* stats are less important than "number changes".

aug 4, 2025, 9:41 pm • 3 1 • view
avatar
Peter Ellis @freerangestats.info

Of course, to do c) well in terms of generating profit etc you want good understanding of the actual economy, and good official stats. But if you are just in the financial market for the casino / beauty contest and betting which way everyone else goes, they could just as well be random numbers.

@freerangestats.info sorry I misunderstood your post. You're exactly right. For a man like Dalio, it's no problem if the BLS numbers are unreliable. In fact, it's even beneficial for him. The more difficult it is for investors to assess the economy, the more likely they'll seek his advice.

avatar
Peter Ellis @freerangestats.info

yes, I agree - but I see this as part of a) (technocratic decision-making with eg index-adjusted benefits) and then presumably b) (if things get too bad, people will start changing votes).

So Dalit should be fired or never go on tv if one of his predictions is wrong? What is wrong with these people? The surveys were wrong. it was fixed when actual data came in. The jobs numbers were off by .01% of total jobs in the US. Dalio would be lucky to be that good in his models.
