As a national poll of what’s a two-round system per district, it’s hard to project. But here’s what the poll shows: The leading far-right party at 31%. The Left Bloc’s two halves at 16.5% & at 10%. Macron’s party at just 13.5%. And the traditional conservatives at 10%.

So a majority of French voters want a right-wing government?

Big Qs here are if left manages to ally again as it did in 2024 (definitely will be tricky), & if Macron’s party & the conservatives (who have been governing together) ally. The whole R1 stakes is to see who makes it to runoffs to face the far-right, which would be in a position to win again.

Q from someone who doesn't follow at all: Is the impending collapse due to the upcoming recognition of the Palestinian state? and a general comment, I've heard our Dems are like Europe's conservatives, but man, I think Europe's conservatives might be lapping them.

No, not at all. It’s all about no one having anything close to a majority in parliament and disagreements over the debt and budget.

The thing is: Macron, the president, has to decide whether to call early elections. And the collapse of his bloc to just 13.5% implies he could face a wipeout. So that really suggests he’ll try everything to not call elections. But the political crisis could escalate enough he feeels compelled to.

Let’s hope Macron learned from his mistake in calling an election the last time; what a disastrous decision that was.

Dumbass naïve question - with all that is going on in the world, and the complete disaster that the U.S. is, are the French not seeing Macron’s and France’s position as the new “leader of the free world”? Why would France risk so much right now when so much needs their leadership?

I, French here. We (I) hate Macron as hell and everything he stand for since at least 2017, his first election. He is a danger to our democracy, not as much as Trump in the US but still. He refuse contradiction, repeat far right vocabulary and moral panic and defend se*ual aggressor like Depardieu

He said he was a great actor and that he made the France proud. Oh and he kept Darmanin in our government. You can make a quick search with "Dramanin" "housing" and "Blow J" as key words 🙂

And what is a leader of the free world without a majority in his own country? I mean, he could give speech and lecture the world but without the ability to follow though.... Like, if he make a promise but the parliament say "no", it's useless. Even if Macron whole personality is speaking for nothing

An exemple of "he is a danger for our democracy" : Bayrou, our PM essentially said that the choices (in economy) he proposed was THE only way to do and that the people who will vote him out (the parliament) are endangering our public debate. Macron said something similar a few months ago.

Macron said "je ne fais pas de politique" in a factory in the north of France. In other words, the choices he is making are the only ones logical and possible. So everyone else is wrong and he is right. But it's the opposition the problem of course 🙃

Do I have to add that he and his allies essentially refused to chosse between LFI a left party (and some other left candidates if I remember) and the RN the far right party in some duels in assembly elections? I mean, they are supposed to fight far right but.. Not so hard when it means vote left

(You’ll remember Macron stunned everyone by dissolving the Assembly in June of 2024 for no reasons whatsoever. It took a lot of alliances and strategic voting, fire against Macron’s wishes, for the left and center parties to prevent the far-right from winning — but the chamber ended up very split.)

It was right after the far right win in the eauropean election. I don't know why he did it because it only reenforced the far right in the assembly.... Unless that's what he wanted as a strategic 4D chess move or I don't know what but it was terrible
