I brought the habit back from London and always give a hearty "thank you driver," as I step off. I see it about 20% of the time? But I'm not a regular.
I detest shopping, but it's a necessary thing because I like to eat. I try to give strangers in stores a smile & a friendly nod. Especially folks who appear to have been dealt a tough hand in the world. I hope it makes them feel "seen", but I know it makes me feel a little bit happier.
Even just childhood standard manners...I am the "may I please have" lady, and it always gets people in the feels. 🥹 These are either friction or fruition moments in cities - either you find the way to make it pleasant, thus building something better about life, or are increasingly miserable.
