I visited Istanbul at Christmas and passed a lot of armed military. Including armored cars with a machine gun on top. At no point did I feel safer with those soldiers there, even as someone who can pass for Turkish.

My friends can't pass and people would start talking to them in English. For me they started Turkish then went English.
