A big assumption of American democracy is that each branch of government would jealously and furiously guard its power, that people’s egos would keep other egos in check. Congress ceding its authority blows up that whole dynamic.

Yes. Maybe the two biggest differences this go round with Trump is: 1) nihilistic/selfish active cooperation from many cultural and corporate elites/owners and 2) absolutely zero “normie” GOP resistance in the senate (and Dem losses in senate). Remember Flake, McCain, Romney?
