I've figured out some parts of how the dialogue system works but not yet how to get out the other portraits

Kinda worked! I loaded a different portal, it just didn't 100% load correctly. I think there's a separate pattern index or something...

portrait, not portal. that's a different game, and I haven't added either of them to the death generator

maybe I should try breaking the game and see what changes

oh hey I know where the first shown portrait is stored, and I can search the ROM for additional portraits easily now. I just need to modify the ROM to shove every other portrait into the first portrait shown, then run the game until it shows that portrait for me, then screenshot

finding additional portraits may be trickier than I thought

having this sprite in my peripheral vision while I hack on this has made me unable to see this as anything other than Gendo* having waist length hair * every time I've tried to type his name, I get "Gondo" instead. NOT HIS NAME, FOONE!
