My mom was criticized for teaching my sister and I to disagree with her occasionally. Mom replied that you can't have democracy if people are not allowed to voice dissenting opinions

There's a Chinese saying: if you raise a dragon, expect to be singed. My mom said that people misinterpret it. The point isn't to avoid raising dragons altogether. We need a society with people who stand up for what is right. What they believe. It's just personally inconvenient for their moms 😉

My parents more unintentionally raised one, because their hope was for compliance, but then they demonstrated the virtues of being true to one's values and stubbornly so, and accidentally raised a contrarian (by their lights).
