“numbers arent real,” i assure myself as i close my eyes and ram the storrow drive overpass with my shitty box truck
It's true. It is fun.
Going to need a live webcam of this Storrow story.
ayuh
Ya cahn't get theyuh from heyuh, drivin' a truck thaht tahll.
damn that's lower than the famous one that ended up getting raised
10'6" is *exactly* the rated height of some rental trucks. Fully loaded they might run an inch low, so they'll clear the warning sign, but then they hit a crack or a pothole and bounce a little.
My daughter just graduated from BU. We saw someone get Storrowed last year during move in
Every year 🍿
oh ya, that's a classic
I have a friend in Boston which is how I learned of this and it's sort of a bucket list thing for me now (to see it, not to do it.)
11foot8.com obligatory early internet link
yay it's the little bridge with the biiig appetite
Thank you for sharing this gem!
I lived there for several years. There are grade crossings a block away on each side. The chances of a train coming through while you're heading/leaving downtown aren't all that high but if one does come through it's likely to be a lo-o-ong freight train. You'll be sitting there a while. 🧵
When those long trains come through people turn onto the road paralleling the tracks over to the underpass. No problem as long as you know how tall your vehicle is. (NCDOT did a lot of work on it. When I lived there it was a narrow road with the standard yellow road sign above. Lots of scrapings)
I love 11ft8
share.google/s2ISiFWLfpnB... One of my personal faves
the rotation is impressive tbh
Very.
Woulda made it through if they didn't Tokyo Drift into the underpass.
There's a fun physics lesson plan to be drawn from this. The angled bridge is a draw cut, and once the I-beam gets its teeth into the sheet metal, the notch in the truck gets drawn along the beam to the right, tangental to the truck's original vector. In this exercise, we...
imagine a wicked perfect sphere,
“In Boston you’re not exactly gonna find many frictionless surfaces. But Jim and I grabbed a couple Sam Adams and went to work on that hockey rink to get it pretty damn close.”
Roger, Roger. What’s your vector Victor?
*Strong Bad voice*: STORROWED!
I’m glad other people do this too 😆
Who amongst us has not accused their children of holding a light switch rave?
that bridge was destroying trucks fifty years ago.
I think it's pretty well established by now which one is stronger.
I don't think insurance will cover that
📌
Most of you are familiar with Storrow Drive because your intelligent parents read you Make Way For Ducklings. It's the street where Michael stops traffic.
Okay, I looked it up and see that Storrow is parallel to Commonwealth (I’ve run the marathon a few times). What’s the cross street?
Been too long, I'd have to look it up. Just south of the Garden, though.
I learned to drive on Storrow Drive & saw many object lessons on Prudent Driving. My dad once departed the river lane, drove across the median, making a cop jump aside, and drove a wrong-way block on a one-way street. Because of a concert at the Hatch Shell.
Ooof, I took my driving test there. Good times. They've at least changed the traffic pattern so it's (a little) better now.
We used to live near a street/bridge like that. Classic stuff.
open the schools
An actual seasonal pasttime, no joke.
merry allston christmas
Then go to Allston and look for salvageable stuff left on the curb
I strive to hate on this level
🍿
Summer’s over when the tops of rental trucks in Boston are peeled open for all to see!
Who takes that much stuff to college? Don’t they know how small dorm rooms are? I think this bridge is teaching them a valuable lesson in not needing so much crap
It’s not just kids going to college. The entire city moves on September 1st! (It’s a whole thing and extremely annoying)
TBF, we could all do with such a lesson.
freshmen. freshmen take that much stuff to college. they'll learn.
I had to read and then look at the picture multiple times before I realized this was not a thing the college kids were also doing for fun 😅
Literally referred to as Storrowing.
small town i moved from has a specific spot dedicated to one of these with a facebook group and internet camera you can watch. genuinely nothing better.
I watched a twitch stream that showed one of these, it was a fun time 🚛
well. was it fun
This happened to a friend of mine who was on his way to get a joint MD-PhD concurrently at Harvard and MIT. Today he is an internationally recognized scientist running a lab that developed a groundbreaking COVID test (as a side project!). If it can happen to him, it can happen to you.
You're right, that does look fun
It's one of the things I'm proudest of, as a native Bostonian, that the city and commonwealth steadfastly refuse to do anything to fix or prevent the Storrowings. It's too expensive, and there are plenty of signs, so really it's their own fault.
TBF, one has to hit the overhead signs well before the bridge. If that doesn't tip a driver off to a problem, I'm not sure what will.
Impressive!
STORROW’D! (Ow! My security deposit!)
I miss Boston.
"Storrowing", yes. It's a verb. 😄
Oh wow, I live a couple hours from Boston! We could do this on a weekend! Cool.
It is this particular weekend because Sept 1 is moving day.
I mean, yes on other days, this happens! Just that Sept 1 is when people take bets on when the first Storrowed truck will hit. It's, uh, a whole local thing.
Hmm. We can't get there for tomorrow, but I can *absolutely* plan for next year. Fun!!
sometimes Google still works
😭😂
The Louisville Can Opener has its own facebook group.
There are YouTube complications of people doing this and it's pretty entertaining tbf
I heard this is pretty common a sight in Ohio. Apparently, they pave the roads over the old and never update the height limit signs to reflect the now several inches higher road.
That's unkind, you can do that for well-heeled US kids going up to Montreal to go to McGill, too.
We need a catchy name for this since we already have Allston Christmas at the other end of the year. I'd like to submit All Storrow's Day
Allston Christmas is Sept 1st, so the Storrowings are just part of the festivities
I always thought Allston Christmas was move out day, not move in day. But I could be wrong. I'm not from here and went to college out in the valley where there is nature and rock climbing.
I’d totally watch that
shit, i just realized the boom on my truck is 10'10". that's a low ass bridge lol
Storrow Drive, the dream destroyer
Immediately clocked this as Storrow before I even read the post lol
There's merch! bsky.app/profile/univ...
