That’s great!
I’m long been against homework, other than an occasional project. My main reason is simple: adults are tired & burned out after a day at work. It is hard for us to do more work after we are home. How much harder for kids? Why should they go to school all day then do *more * work?
*I’ve Also - home, family time is important. There are other life lessons to be learned there. Don’t take away from it with homework.
Bad teachers load up on homework that is pointless. Good teachers give homework that isn't. My worry is particularly with math because if kids aren't prepared in elementary with the basics it snowballs into a mess when they hit algebra and trigonometry.
I understand and I’m not worried here in Massachusetts, but anywhere else in this country, especially red states where most parents don’t posses the knowledge to read properly, understand basic math and science.
The main problem is that a lot of parents in rural areas either don't care or don't know what a good school is like because all they have been exposed to is a poor school. So this snowballs into the school staying bad, and those who go to college feel betrayed because they are behind their peers.
Exactly, plus we have kids too . Absolutely not doing any work after school .
Wow. You wouldn't spend time to help your child learn or to read or to read to them. I weep
YES. No reason elementary students need to have homework. Just make sure they have library time in school.
How many households own books anymore?
I’m going to be blunt, anyone who supports Trump has books on shelves in their home, they don’t buy book for their children. They are not about that pesky book learning. It’s blue bs red: it’s educated, smart, articulate vs ignorant , embarrassing and just plain dumb.
Has no books in the shelves. *
What is you live with a horrible family where you are terrified every day? What if your parents are ignorant and don't respect education? At least homework is a requirement? This is a disaster. It also opens up potential time for child labor and THAT is a goal once again.
We all know who these types of parents are, they already set the precedent that no child could complete homework to begin with in these homes.
Hopefully, more states will follow.
My grandson has no homework at his elementary school either . He is north of Houston, but it wary’s district by district
They should allow kids to be kids. Kids need to run, play outside, laugh, and enjoy life.
Yup, never advances learning.
Agree!
I applaud this only it seems like wishful thinking that parents will use that time to read to their kids. Some will, not many.
Sadly, a lot of parents won't take the time to spend with their kids. Let alone read to them.
Here I’m not worried, it’s more Western Mass, Cletus country , where it will be a problem .
Just grabbed two stats from an early literacy site In low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book in the home for every 300 children. 80% of preschool and after-school programs serving low-income populations have no age-appropriate books for their children.
I'm still in favor though because I think young children learn a ton more from unstructured play than from homework We'll still have to work on literacy though
As a retired Massachusetts high school English teacher, I applaud this effort, too.
What's "family reading time?" Asking as a recently retired teacher. /s
🤷♀️ I know a lot of my former kids go to the library for story time and or have the parents read to them in the evening. Maybe that constitutes as family reading time?!
Yes, it does. The /s denotes sarcasm. I think it's a very small percentage of families who read together. 😥 When I taught at a middle class school, I asked my students. It was only about 12%
Wow. See? 🤔
I'm happy to see this. I was always overburdened with homework as a child. I absolutely hated it. Once school was over, it was supposed to be over!
