Well, I suppose we could go for a Sweedish model. To gain that level of independence would be a significant uplift in funding, though. I mean, they're going from 2.5 to 3.5 of gdp. Plus, we're very inefficient in producing anything here. So I can't see the govt stepping away from Aukus.

ABC reported AUKUS = Aus to provide bases for US subs and includes Aus being with US in any Taiwan 'defending' activity. ie, AUKUS makes Aus a vassal under the command of USA. Albo has recently sounded independent. Is this why a 'review' suddenly?

No way this happens. We send billions for no guaranteed return. This is like saying we hope our gas customers give up their contracts for free gas. Where is the incentive for them? Even tromp is smart enough to keep this one. More likely he'll add a 10 to 100% tariff. And we pay.

Media reporting on it is confusing. They're painting it being cancelled as the worst thing ever but all of the evidence shows that we were never going to receive the subs. The US building program is running years behind and won't meet their replacement schedule in any foreseeable timeframe.
