He's capable of so much more, the films are sort of enjoyable enough , but James Cameron could and should be giving us films as good as Denis Villneuve 😥 — even if he matched where Christopher Nolan is he'd be doing alright , instead it feels like he's on a fixation with nobody to say "no".

He effectively retired creatively after the first movie. I'd love to see him tackle headier material - his collaboration with Soderbergh on Solaris was fascinating - but I think these days he enjoys the process more than the finished product.

Ridley Scott probably isn't as good as they were at the peak of their career but at least he's constantly going in different directions and trying for that same level of greatness in different ways— I think there's something really respectable about that

Yup. He's swinging for the fences, is old Rid. I'd argue that he's still stymied by issues he's faced throughout his career - adhd storytelling, visuals at the expense of all else - but you can't argue with the numbers. He shoots and the audience turns up.

Honestly, it's my lifetime goal to finish out my later years like Scott ... I want to die at some respectable old age in the wee small hours of the morning after a wrap party.

Now that's the way to do it! My last words? A whispered "No notes."

James Cameron has always made crowd pleasing movies his entire career. His style has always been distinct from those other directors - and all three of them seem to respect each other a great deal.

Mmmm the crowd is a bit confused and bored right now, but he's not hearing it. I dunno ,maybe he'll absolutely smash it with the last two films and write something absolutely radical ? As long as he's not soaking up money that'd otherwise go to Villneuve I'll be happy enough 💰😁

Both Avatar and Avatar 2 were the most financially successful films ever made. And that's despite both copping plenty of criticism. Personally I think the last movie featured enough talking whales to not be considered boring. But we'll see what happens I guess.

Yea and this is why I don't mind it at all , if he's not taking down studios or wrecking post production houses he can do what he likes , just don't expect us to like it if it's lacking any biting edge that makes us excited.
