All sorts of things include algae and something else. We are trying infrared analysis atm, but so far, they are proving difficult to characterise.

Have you tried biomarkers like cholestane, ergostane and stigmastane? At least that might help label green v red algae and eliminate or include fungi etc

Not yet. I'm hoping to try that on individual fossils in the near future. It just depends if I can get a postdoc or fellowship to continue doing science after this funding ends in December.
