From memory you'd see at least a couple a day in Crete in the early summer. The local name for them translates as 'Biker jacket bees'.

#1 Amazing bees, wish I'd seen them. I visited Crete 45 yrs. ago with a group from Deree College. There's no other place like Crete. Saw my 1st flowering artichoke. Even better, we went to the cave where baby Zues was hidden from his murderous father.
