I am pretty sure there is a process to be adopted to renew or extend a visa. If a person wants to do that then the obligation is on them to get the appropriate advice and make the application. I think the government has plenty else to be doing.

don't explain the visa process to someone whose wife has done an entry visa, renewal, and an ILR application. the process is you have to guess and dig around on broken or outdated UKVI pages. if ukgov can cost you £3k+ per 30 month renewal, their "plenty else" can include some info on a letter

i'll cut to the chase: you're a government apologist, and you will arrive there by way of being a home office apologist no matter how illogical or needlessly stupid the process is up for discussion. i'm curious if you'd be saying this if it was a tory government

I’m a lawyer. (albeit not an immigration one) I haven’t commented on the qualities of the process adopted by the home office. I don’t know. But I do know that we have to have some rules otherwise the whole system is pointless.

you alluded to a process - that you're not familiar with - and then also described that process as being something along the lines of "you have to guess or pay money to someone to explain it, on account of having to guess". the latter is an explanation, which you explained to me

The Home Office is a combination of useless and malevolent. Before Mrs K, who’s American, and I got married in the 90s we spent weeks making sure she had the right visa. Then she got deported when we came back from our weekend honeymoon because she had the wrong visa. They’d changed the rules /1

…and not bothered to tell us - this was the explanation we got from actual Home Office staff. In the years since, with three kids who aren’t UK citizens, we have been treading a minefield of threats, misinformation and huge expense. The system is absolutely malevolent.

also date instability is built into the process by default. 33 months for a spouse visa from overseas, 30 if applied for inside the uk. all of this will affect time spent in the uk to ILR vs needing to renew. does the home office spend all of 10 seconds autofilling this on any letters? lol nope

I just think the proposition that if you overstay you will be asked to leave is a pretty unarguable one? Otherwise why have time limits on visas at all.

If the resources are there to send a letter before visa expiry, it's not unreasonable to expect that letter to contain useful information about future paths and possibilities. If it's just a veiled threat, why do it at all? Do we think students don't know when their visas expire?

there's hundreds of pages of rules in appendix FM & multiple additional rules elsewhere for every part of the spouse visa, but only a small finite number of time-related "do x or y if date x or y". any excuse made for them not adding a handful of dates matching the BRP/evisa doesn't wash imo

no, you seem to have a huge issue with basic and useful information being included on renewal documentation. apparently ukvi has "better things to do". do you get mad when your council tax letters have dates on them? your bills? every other form of correspondence you interact with?
