As a former soldier, I'll just point out that knowing an illegal order isn't an easy thing. I'd've refused to torture folks in Abu Graib and I might've done time in Leavenworth for refusing what SCOTUS decided was a legal order. That duty is subject to pressure from chain of command and ambiguity.

That said, we were (30 years ago) absolutely informed about that duty and affirmed that we understood it. It wasn't hidden away in small print. And the future of our republic may well rely on the individual judgement of twenty year olds.
