We'll never get rid of #racism in Australia, as it's human nature to default to paranoia and fear of the 'other.' The best we can hope for is they remain a minority. The national turnout for Palestine recently far outnumbered the paltry anti-immigration showing yesterday. That gives me hope #auspol

However, don’t take the poor showing for the marches on Sunday as proof that racism is rare. To appear at such a march is a very strong message that one is racist. This means only the really committed and QLD parliamentarians will turn up. But so many with milder racism will not.

I don't think it is rare, just in Australia its still a minority, and has no power like it does in the US, emboldened by a racist leader. We've shown that we would never elect someone like that by booting Dutton out of his seat. You can't eliminate it, it will always be with us.

I think that is wishful thinking.

The Australian electorate is seriously credulous, but once it gets a decent sniff, tends to act. See Morrison, Campbell Newman. Yet it went within months of potentially electing Dutton, according to the polls. (YIK, polls were probably a fair way out by then, but not completely wrong.)
